J Skeme

My Story

Being raised in an African Christian household and having lived in two countries (Japan and the USA) and six states, gave DJ Skeme valuable moments that shaped his diverse tastes, perspectives, and deep appreciation for art, culture, and community.

He earned his style of djing in the most unconventional way.. from a Japanese dj who did not speak English. That dedication to learning turned into a 20+ year career in music curation that his taken him to 3 countries, and over 30 venues.

These influences ignited a creative spark that led him to become an event curator developing Frequency, Audio Excursion, and Pamoja, a podcaster with his company UrbanKCore, as well as a board member of the prestigious West 18th Street Fashion Show.

His devotion to community engagement has also led him to volunteer for organizations such as Harvesters, Operation Breakthrough, Rose Brooks, community gardens, and back-to-school drives.

AfroKC LEGACY AWARDS:

The AfroKC Legacy Awards honor and celebrate individuals and organizations within the Kansas City community who make a meaningful difference, particularly in promoting and preserving African, African American and Afro-diasporic culture. These awards shine a light on the often-unrecognized efforts of community leaders, artists, educators, and advocates whose work uplifts cultural identity, fosters unity, and drives positive change. By acknowledging these contributions, the AfroKC Legacy Awards not only validate the importance of cultural heritage and grassroots impact but also inspire future generations to continue building strong, vibrant, and inclusive communities.
